BCIT News: How to Make Wellness Equitable

I was invited for a conversation with BCIT News on how to make wellness equitable, why it’s not, and what we can do about it.

Coming on the heels of a CBC Gem documentary, Identity of Wellness, a journalist student from BCIT invited Summan Kandola and I to discuss our journeys as women of colour in wellness spaces.

One of the questions that was asked of us was how to decolonize, and I shared that it starts from within. Decolonization can mean the political act of landback, something physical and tangible that we can see. Decolonization is also dismantling the colonizer within. Otherwise, we’re playing musical chairs for a chance for the seat of power… In this interview, I was thinking often of how it is important for people of colour to also examine their racial biases for we can also perpetuate racist stereotypes. That we can also other. And that when we don’t acknowledge this, we can’t take accountability for our actions, and we can’t change.

Our conversation begins at the 20 minute mark.
